In an ongoing sports theme for the year, no lead is ever safe, especially in the championship game where everything is on the line. Warriors up 3-1, Falcons up 28-3, you all know the history. You can add Tuesday night's Men's Championship game to the list, where BDB overcame a 26-0 first half score to win 41-40 over Go Balls Deep.
In the first half, nothing could go right for BDB. After allowing a first possession score, they threw an INT that led to another score. Then they threw another INT that was returned for a TD. Then they turned the ball over on downs, leading to the 4th score of the half for Go Balls Deep. They began to gain momentum going into halftime, finally getting on the scoreboard as time expired in the first half. Down 26-6 at the half, they must have had a hell of a motivational speech, as they came roaring back in the second half.
The teams traded scores to open the second half, and Go Balls Deep was up 32-12. BDB came back with another score to cut the lead to 12, then followed up a huge 4th down stand with another score to cut the lead to 32-27 with about 5 minutes to go. After securing another INT, BDB marched down and scored to take a 33-32 lead. That's when Go Balls Deep seemed to wake up, as they ran down the field to take the lead back, 40-33. A huge INT seemingly won it for Go Balls Deep, as they had the ball, were up 7, and driving at the 2 minute mark. The biggest play of the game came when captain Matt Murray nabbed an INT in the end-zone with about a minute and a half left, giving his team the opportunity to come down and score the winning TD. They did just that with 20 seconds left, taking the 41-40 lead. It was all up to the defense, and the defense did their job, keeping everything in front of them as time expired on an end-zone pass that was broken up.
All in all, a tremendous championship game that both teams should be proud to walk away from. But, there does need to be a winner, and BDB earned it. Great game, congrats!
Matt M earns this week's Player of the week for coming up with the biggest play of the game, an INT in the endzone toward the end of the championship game that allowed his team the opportunity to march down the field and score the game winning TD. Great job and great game!
On a cold and misty Tuesday evening, Scott Zerda brought the heat for BDB. Scott was unstoppable, catching three touchdowns, and snagging an interception on defense, leading his team to a 36-12 victory.
Kevin Martin had one of the rarest first-halves in Underdog history. He went just 3-3, a modest number at the surface. But 3-3 with 3 TD's, now that's something special. I think the QBR on those stats tops out at 100, but we should probably think of developing a new metric to showcase Kevin's awesomeness. Well done!
