The snow began to fall a few minutes before the start of the playoffs, and with it the meaning of 'Winter League' was fully realized.
Just a BIT Outside began their campaign in a back-and forth affair with the Seawalks, emerging victorious by 5 as the snow began to accumulate. Pitches Be Crazy had an easier go of it in their game, and handily dispatched Indy 500 as the snow began to thicken even further.
The final was a winter wonderland, with the snow bogging down players and making even the most routine plays difficult. The league's best defenses surrendered 18 combined runs in the first two innings, and for awhile it seemed the defense from the recent Super Bowl had been borrowed for this 'Snow Bowl'. Player of the game Pat had a huge catch early on fighting snow and wind in the deep outfield, making a fabulous catch as he stumbled to the ground. By the 6th inning the score was knotted at 14. The game had turned passionate and intense, and by this point the field itself was hard to see through the powder.
In the 6th frame Outside marked 4 and Pitches 3, and the 7th inning began with a warning: The lights might soon go out, in which case that score would stand. Outside plated an insurance run and Pitches came to bat, clawing back a run of their own and setting up a potential comeback when the field instantly went dark. The game thus reverted to the 18-17 score, although neither team was satisfied with such a dramatic finish taken from them. Just a BIT outside took the win, but Pitches Be Crazy could have had a chance.
Amelia is player of the week this week for playing through a hand injury for her team, continuing to bat one-handed and field since her team was looking at a shortage of girls. She still contributed with strong hits and great defense, even making a few catches down the stretch to help her group seal the chanpionship. For perseverance and fighting spirit, Amelia is player of the week!
Joe pitched all game tonight and threw a great game, keeping the opposing team at bay and off balance. Offensively he had a good game too but it all came down to his at bat in the sixth. With a tied game and a runner on, Joe clubbed a ball that landed just inside the foul line and led to a two run home run that ended up winning the game. Joe had a great night all around.
Stephen is a perennial Underdog Performer, and this Wednesday he proved that once again with a great day all around the diamond. He crushed a home run to the tennis courts of Bobby Morris, the ball catching tree branches on its way down. Also a lock-down defender in left field, Stephen ran down many would-be blasts and turned them into frustrating outs for his opposition. His team fell a run short in their game, but with a player like Stephen pushing hard, Just a BIT outside is poised for a title run!
