It seemed destined from the middle of the season; the Lions would be playing for the championship when the calendar flipped to March. Since a loss early in the season they had gone on a tear, and earned the number one seed. Whom they would play would need to be settled first.
The early game pitted Snowballs Deep and Stranger Danger in a strong fight, that ended 14-13 to the Danger. The Brooklyn B's then routed and undermanned Sandlot Dogs and followed it up with a 31-7 domination of Here Come the Runs. The Lions took care of Stranger Danger 18-3, setting the stage for an epic final.
The two clubs found themselves evenly matched, trading runs through the first few innings. In the 2nd, the Lions plated 4, and had opened the lead to 6-3. A few more runs and innings later saw the score at 8-6, both teams suddenly having to work for runs, finding each other a bit more stingy than the earlier opponents. The Lions bit down in the 5th inning behind Alex Kremer's pitching, and did not allow another run after that, taking the game by 9 runs to 6.
The Lions won their maiden title in their maiden season, and worked hard to improve as a team over the year. Their youthful power and defensive work allowed them to rise to the top, and they completely deserved this victory.
Alex Kremer gets the player of the week nod really for his stewardship of the Lions for the entire season, including their great play on Sunday for the championship. It is not easy to enter Underdog as a new team, and harder still to battle veteran teams all the way to a title. Alex worked hard with his team throughout the year helping them improve, and it paid off with his great pitching leading the way as his team rallied behind him and won the league crown.
Eric is player of the week this week by virtue of his dramatic, walk-off RBI delivering the Lions their maiden Underdog victory. With the bases loaded Eric smacked a ground ball to short which set everyone in motion. Hustling down the line Eric beat out the throw before turning to see his teammate cross home for the winning score. An exciting moment surely, and well worth player of the week honors. Eric also played well the entire night, with some other big hits and typically excellent defensive play.
