Brian Welsh threw a touchdown pass with 29 seconds remaining and then was able to connect on a 1 point conversion pass, leading XXX Coverage to a 35-34 win over a stubborn Lucky Dogz squad. In one of the finest championship games played, both teams relied on efficient offenses and when needed, stingy defenses.
XXX Coverage sprurted to an early 20-6 lead, but the Lucky Dogz battled back to tie the game at 20 on the last play of the first half. Paul Mennillo led the Lucky Dogz resurgence, connecting on passes to Andrew Kawamura, Kevin and Michelle Clark and Danny Hanken.
The Lucky Dogz started with the ball in the 2nd half, but their first drive stalled at midfield. XXX took over from there and Welsh hit on passes to Brenda Solemsaas, Victoria Templora and Rob Templora, driving down the field to regain the lead, 28-20. The Lucky Dogz answered with 2 consecutive scoring drives to first tie the game and then take the lead. After an unsuccessful 2 point conversion (batted down by Rob Templora), the score stood at 34-28.
With the 2 minutes remaining, XXX started their game winning drive. Welsh hit Rob Templora for a first down and then completed a couple of passes to drive down inside the numbers. On third down, XXX scored the game tying touchdown. Their first attempt at the one point conversion and the lead was successful, only to be wiped out by offsetting penalties. But they were again able to convert on their 2nd attempt to take a one point lead.
Mennillo and the Lucky Dogz weren't done yet, they had 29 seconds and one timeout. After a first down completion, the Lucky Dogz were forced to take their final timeout. After another completion, they took 3 shots at the endzone, but were stymied on all of them. The final try from Mennillo to Danny Hanken, sailed just out of the receivers reach in the back of the endzone as time ran out. And so ended a great championship game.
In the semi finals, the Lucky Dogz rallied in the 2nd half to sneak by Chaos, 46-40. In the other semi, XXX hit was hitting on all cylinders as they posted a mild upset over #1 seed 3rd and Schlong, 56-28.
It was a great night of flag football by all the teams, as they showed both the will to win and great sportsmanship. Thanks to all of them for a great season.
The championship week POTW is Lyn McSharry. Lyn provided relentless pressure on the opposing QB in XXX Coverage's 56-28 win over 3rd and Schlong. McSharry's "nat like" pestering forced the QB into numerous uncharacteristic mistakes, notably 3 interceptions, including a pick 6. Lyn also caught a number of passes for key first downs. Great hustle, Lyn!
