There were two teams destined to meet in the championship of the Ballard Bos and Girls Club summer league. Balls Smashers and Nuff Said, entered their championship match with virtually identical records, each with only one loss. After the Balls Smashers took care of the Red Rubber Lovers, they hung around to size up their championship competition as Nuff Said coasted by the Bada Bings. It was on, yo.
What ensued can only be described as good ole down and dirty kickball. As expected, strong defense was the norm. After Nuff Siad scored a run early in the first, the Smashers came right back with one of their own in the bottom half. Both teams knew they would have to play mistake free in order to squeeze out a victory.
After a few scoreless innings, it looked like the Smashers broke the game open with a 2 run 4th. A few huge kicks by their catcher Zack, along with some "interesting" fielding choices by Nuff Said spurred them on to a 3-1 lead. But Nuff Said never took their eyes off the prize. After getting one back in the bottom half, they retook the lead in the fifth, with the go ahead run scoring on a slide into home that just beat the throw.
The Smashers themselves had a chance to send it into extra innings. With a runner on first and just one out, a screaming line drive was sent up the first base line, sure to drop for at least a base hit, and maybe even scoring the tying run. But all star first baseman Franco Delorean was having none of it, leaping into the air and making a finger tip catch which was surely the play of the game. One more out, and Nuff Said had secured their first league championship in as many tries.
Congratulations on your first Championship, guys! Nuff Said.
Nuff Said steamrolled the Sunday Ballard Boys and Girls Club Midcore league with a boatload of talent. But it was Franco Delorean's outstanding play in the playoffs and championship that earned them a title. An honorable mention goes to the Bada Bings' Josh Platis for the play of the week- throwing a Nuff Said runner out a few steps from a home run from the outfield. But by that tiome, the game was already in the bag, thanks to Franco's game changing kicks. In the championship game the story was the same, but more importantly, Franco had the play of the game- a leaping fingertip catch in the bottom of the seventh, straight up robbing the Balls Smashers of a sure hit and a potential game tying run. Congratulations to Franco and Nuff Said, on their championship- you guys earned it.
Nuff Said and Totally Sober had a hard-fought game, with all the runs scored by Nuff Said during a brief but explosive drive early in the game. Nuff Said's nearly flawless defense made all the difference in the outcome. Jay, Tyler, and Britney dazzled with their ballet-juggle of a catch, keeping the red rubber off the ground with diving bobbles by all until it was finally reigned-in for the out.
