With a little sadness in the air, Big Turkey Bowlers took the lanes of Sunset for the last Thursday ever Among them were long time bowlers The Bowling Stones. The Stones have already spent several seasons in Underdog, going from a carefree bunch just looking to have a good time, to a carefree bunch flirting with the greatness of a championship. After knocking on the door several times, including heartbreaking championship losses, this Thursday would be their last chance to get one on their turf, the bowling alley we've all called our home away from home for so long. Would they get there this time?
There were no surprises in the first round as the #1 and #2 seeds That's How We Roll- previously undefeated rookies mind you- and The Bowling Stones took care of their respective competition I Can't Believe It's Not Gutter and Pin Stalkers by a few dozen pins a piece. However, once into the next rounds, both matches took on epic overtones, as everyone perhaps realized that this might be their last game at Sunset. Former champs ICBING took care of another former championship team Pin Stalkers by less than a handful of pins, and the championship match seemed to be headed in the same direction.
It was more than once that the phrase "this is tense" was uttered from both teams.
In the end, though, the Bowling Stones could not be stopped on their magical quest for their first ever championship, as they ultimately triumphed over That's How We Roll 568 - 564. One pin was all they needed, four was what they got.
Sometimes the story just works out right, folks. As the lights go down on Sunset one last time Sunday evening, we'll remember a place that was about more than just bowling. It was 51 years of family and friends, a place Underdog called home for at least half a decade.
Thanks to all for the memories, and congratulations to The Bowling Stones and all our great teams for being a part of the history of Sunset.
From Underdog Rookies to Champions; it's the Underdog story in action. The Bowling Stones have kept their core almost completely intact during their few years with us. They've kept at it, they've lost big, and come back for more, and now they ca say they climbed the mountain top when it mattered most. Not to mention their a damn nice bunch of people. Here's to you guys, good things come to those who wait.
The Bowling Stones have been knocking on the door of greatness the past few seasons of BTB. If they keep getting performances like Emi Byrnes' one on Thursday night, they'll break right through the door into a full on home invasion. Emi started out decent with a 142 in her first game, but then went crazy, rolling six strikes in a row to finish with a 235 in her second game. WOW! Unfortunately, Emi could not be reached for comment after the game as she was busy crushing walnuts in between her biceps and moving objects with her mind.
