For years, the Extra Special Ballers have dominated Underdog Kickball Leagues by employing optimal kickball strategy. Everything about their play style belies intention and purpose. A calculated, consistent lineup sheet combined with seasoned field rotations prevent nearly all of the "unexpected" type plays which so often plague teams. In a matchup like Tuesday night's, where the two opposing teams both featured extremely athletic lineups, refined skill won the day.
ESB got on the board quickly, scoring once in the first inning with well-crafted small ball play. Runs came at a premium all game -- a close bobble-play at 2nd allowed an ESB score, plus a smart sacrifice fly by Kickin' Balls made it anyone's game. The game opened up a little more on a booming home-run by Tommy, our championship MVP. With two outs and a runner on, Tommy kicked a high, curving shot to right field. the ball had so much spin that it landed just beyond the outfielder's hands -- a near impossible play for even the most talented competitor. ESB then sealed the game with their impeccable defense.
Though ESB's technical prowess helps then win games, their attitude and amicable disposition put everyone in a good mood. They pump each other up and do not bring anyone else down -- the ideal Underdog attitude.
To Kickin' Balls - you all are so much fun. League Titles are in your future. That championship game wild; you deserve all the credit in the world for competing like ..... well, like Champions.
Every other team in the league also deserves a nod. Thank you to all players -- It was a pleasure to meet everyone and an honor to umpire you. Every team brought a unique flavor of fun each Tuesday that made for the most enjoyable Kickball league that this umpire can remember. I hope to see all of you in the future.
