Jaime Souza
Booze on First
Jaime was a powerhouse on both sides of the ball leading her team to an opening day record of 2-0. In a very close game 1, she had a key run scoring triple, 2 singles and scored 2 runs. On defense she was an impenetrable wall at short stop, making multiple stops and some great catches to keep Brews on First from getting any momentum or big innings. She continued her dominating play in game 2 scoring 4 more runs and kicking in 3 even though she had to leave before the final inning. Nice job Jamie and thanks for keeping it fun!

Kristina Nicchi
Gone with the Wind Fabulous
Kristina represents what Underdog sports is all about: having fun. Her team may still be looking for their first victory but that didn't stop her from showing off her skills while also having fun and keeping it positive. Kristina had a huge unassisted DP--making a great catch at shortstop and then beating the runner back to 2nd to end the opponents 3rd inning rally and keep her team within striking distance. On offense, her bunting was near perfect, getting her on base all 5 times she came up to kick and she scored a run as well. Even in the dugout between innings and after the game it was all smiles and with that attitude team-wide the victories are sure to come.

Straight Kickin It 3B Standout Becky Farden Shuts Down Wizards of Smart With Diving Defense
Ballard kickball under the lights! What a week: including a rematch of last year's championship game, two teams sharing ONE dugout the whole game, and there were fans in the stands all night! Random fans, mind you (young and old and passerbys). There were also many more storylines, but most impressive were the double header wins for Becky Farden and her team Straight Kickin It. Playing 3B, Becky shut down the hot corner with quick and calculated diving plays. Not afraid to get a little dust/dirt on her, Becky made play after play to stop the momentum of game one's opponent Gone with the Wind Fabulous and game two's opponent Wizards of Smart. You can tell when someone makes a play because both teams ooh and ahh at the same time. That was a defensive show/clinic at 3B by Becky. That is why, this week, we honour Becky Farden with The Player of the Week award for Ballard Playfield. Game on.

Bottom of the Fifth Standout Rehana Lanewala Completes Double-Header Win
Another exciting week of Ballard Playfield kickball. Plenty of sun. Then, we went into the night to play kickball under the lights. The last game was so close with Bottom of the Fifth edging out PDRs for PBRs 7-6 in seven innings (right before the lights turned off). South Prop Drop won their games. Booze on First and Brews on First won their games against Gone with the Wind Fabulous. Down With The Kickness won 11-5. Plenty of action on the fields. This week's Player of the Week goes to a deserving Bottom of the Fifth's Rehana Lanewala. Rehana played second base. Any groundball force-out that was thrown to her, counted five, was caught securely and confidently. Rehana also recorded outs on line drives and pop-ups. Her plays at 2B made her stand out as the most defensive player this week. She also hit/bunted her way on base to help her team win both games of Bottom of the Fifth's double-header. Congrats to Rehana Lanewala for winning this week's Player of the Week.

Bottom of the Fifth Wins Against Straight Kickin It
Kickball games under the lights at Ballard Playfield brought some heat and intensity leading up to the Spring 2016 playoffs. Games provided close matchups and exciting close calls on every other play. That makes kickball umpiring and playing exciting. We even drew in folks to watching the contested games (while smoking and playing ping pong). What may have been missed earlier Sunday, was kickball in the hot sun. Everyone was dealing with the sun. Hydrate or die. Sunglasses or bust. This week, we will honour Chad and Courtney, pitcher and catcher, from Bottom of the Fifth (shout out to Bottom of the Fifth players for coming back to watch kickball later). We all know how important your pitcher is. Team your pitcher with a decent catcher and you will win games by defense. Chad and Courtney played great and should come back to play (except in playoffs) because they helped their team beat Straight Kickin It 18-6. Kickball under the lights at Ballard Playfield can get competitive, but so is kickball under the hot sun. Thank you to all the players that came out and we will do it again this next week. Congrats to Bottom of the Fifth's Chad and Courtney for Co-POTW.

South Prop Drop Wins Both Games in Double-header
Player of the Week to Matthew James. Matthew James recorded over seven put-outs while playing two games at catcher for South Prop Drop. His whirling and hurling (maybe more of a "hucking" of the kickball) after scooping up the bunted ball is quite an effective method/style. Being fast helps, but Matt is literally sending his momentum into a slingshot mode. As he is turning, his eyes pick up his first baseperson, and that tells him it is time to release the ball. It is an effective play and works (sometimes)! Congrats to South Prop Drop on week one of playoffs for winning their games and Matthew James for playing an effective catcher with style.

PDRs for PBRs Win Championship
Good and bad day at Ballard Playfield. First: we all pray and hope for PDRs for PBRs' Joel Dazey's health and safety after a collision during an unimaginably tough play. Get better soon Joel. We also had championship games to play. That brought out intensity and excitement, as shown by play. Championship game at 6pm was won by South Prop Drop (sporting 'Champion 2016' wrist bands and t-shirts after the game) versus Brews on First. In our 7pm game, the 2016 Champion PDRs for PBRs won their game, but at a great cost. Shout out to Gone with the Wind Fabulous for great sportsmanship. We simply could not play on after J. Dazey's injury and the teams decided to call the game for good cause. Again, congrats to our Spring 2016 champions and get better soon Joel Dazey.
