  Sets on the Beach

Cinderella Story

It was a Cinderella story come true Thursday night in the softcore volleyball championships. Sets on the Beach were the clear underdogs, recently at 5th place in the rankings and taking the 6th seed into the playoffs. Their bracket match-ups looked tough, but Sets on the Beach believed they could place higher. With a possible double header on the schedule Thursday night, Sets came to play.

First up was the semifinal match against Son of a Beach, an Indy team that meshed well from the beginning and was a force to wrecken with. They split the first two sets; The first going to Sets on the Beach 21-16, and the second, same score, in favor of Son of a Beach. They were tied a set a piece, going into the third and final set with a spot in the Championship game on the line. It was a close and exciting final set, but Sets on the Beach pulled away in the end. With great plays from the entire team, extreme hustle, and superb serves from Kristina and Jill, Sets on the Beach pulled off a 21-15 win and earned their spot in the Championship.

It's hard to believe it's softcore volleyball when you get to the finals. The intensity is at another level. Everyone is seasoned, adrenaline is pumping, and emotions are high. Sets on the Beach knew the finals wouldn't be easy, as they were up against the number one seed, Dinks All Around. Dinks had been having a phenomenal season to date. Not undefeated, but a clear leader of the league. Again, Sets split the first two sets with their opponent. This time taking the first set 21-18, then losing the second set 21-9. The second set was not a good sign. Were Sets on the Beach going to fall in the final set? Some became nervous, but not a single player from Sets on the Beach did. They knew they had it in them to come back. It was hard not to root for the underdog.

The third and final set was a nail biter. Both teams left it all on the court. Exquisite skills were displayed on both sides of the net. High energy and excellent plays from both teams brought this Championship set down to the wire. In the end, Sets on the Beach did it. They pulled off a 21-18 Championship victory over a number one team. Sets gives credit to Bob Macon for his killer serves, which he duly deserves, but they could not have pulled off this win without the dedication and effort of each and every player.

Congratulations, Sets on the Beach! Great season!

  509 Block Party

Champions!

509 Block Party finished off the regular season in impressive fashion, boasting a 5-1 record. Their only loss came in the second week and kicked it up a knotch ever since. In fact, their great play got them the number 1 seed heading into playoffs.

509 went up against How I Set Your Mother in their first round. After a tough match up, 509 Block Party was able to advance with a 2-1 victory. On a roll, 509 Block Party was ready to take on the number 2 seed, Gusto & Slap in the championship game.

509 took both of the first two sets, deciding Gusto & Slap's fate early. But it wasn't all smooth sailing. Both sets 509 Block Party only won by 3 points (21-18, both sets). Early in the sets, 509 Block Party and Gusto & Slap were trading off points. But 509 stepped up their defense, covering the the sand line-to-line. This fueled some great rallies eventually resulting in points for 509.

509 Block Party moved all as one, passing with amazing accuracy, hustling to cover for each other, and setting one another up for kills. They dominated at the net and added to their preeminence with multiple aces. With their amazing play, 509 Block Party was able to win sets 1 and 2, crowing them the midcore Champions.

With time to spare they went on to a third set. Gusto & Slap put up an impressive fight and beat the number one team, 21-19 in another intense set. But it was too little too late. 509 Block Party was number one all season and topped of their legit season with a Championship.

Great Job 509 Block Party! A well-deserving team that should be riding high come next season when they defend their title.
