With the clouds breaking, the sun came out and so did the multitude of volleyball players and aimless wanderers. Those of us familiar with the Greenlake Playfields understand this nuisance.
Three games prior to Jamie Weaver's, a group of young volleyball players and their large group of adoring "fans" decided to post up down the left field line. Far enough to be mostly out of play, except for a few platinum blond onlookers who felt they had found the perfect spot to watch the festivities.
Before each game I would walk down the line and politely asked them to move further out of play and each time they would respond with a dismissive, "No thanks, we're good."
After three warnings and three full games of foul balls flying over their heads, Jamie stepped up to the plate. Twirling the bat she muttered something about pulling the ball all day. Sure enough, with a crack of the bat an unfortunate soul wearing a basketball jersey, talking to the group of girls with his back turned, took a well hit softball right between the numbers.
No one said a word. Well...we all laughed a little. Everyone understood.
In one of the wildest games the Statdog has ever seen, the Ninja Turtles and I'd Hit That played an epic seven inning classic. Early on, it was all I'd Hit that as they jumped to a 9-0 lead heading into the fifth. That's when the Ninja Turtles put together a two inning onslaught in which they scored 14 unanswered runs. The Ninja Turtles held on to their five run lead at 18-13, headed into the bottom of the seventh, but I'd Hit that had one more rally left in them in which they scored five runs before the final out was recorded, leaving something to be desired by both teams as the score ended up knotted at 18. However, both teams can be proud of their efforts. TJ Murry pitched an admirable 6 innings, allowing just 13 runs, and striking out two batters, before being pulled before the seventh inning. TJ also chipped in with a Home Run in the bottom of the seventh that was pivotal in forcing the 18-18 tie.
