Tyler was definitely a great player of the week. He made several defensive plays in the outfield to put his team in the position to upset the number one seed this week. He made some timely kicks (although one was a man bunt- just kidding)! He had a great attitude and seemed to be around the ball on offense and defense all night. Great job Tyler.
Kicked Your Balls was sweating up a storm as bases were loaded with two outs in the top of the 7th inning. KPG Rushing Mafia was up, and a female player laid a cool bunt down the line which would have resulted in the go-ahead run. But no! Dylan rushed up to the ball as catcher, and he made a diving under-hand throw to just knick the runner's leg right before she stepped on 1st base. John the spectator, who comes to all the games downtown, was happier than I have ever seen him, and he immediately congratulated Dylan along with the rest of the team. Dylan would score the winning run as well with two outs in the bottom of the 7th. Good stuff!
In since the dawn of Creation, few have mastered the art of kickball pitching like Jacob Anderson. And he knows it. When I asked his team Kicked Your Balls who their player of the game was, he immediately raised his hand and shouted, "me!" And I agree. His game included seven innings, two earned runs, and probably the highest pitch count I have ever witnessed at a kickball game thanks to the very picky opposition. I look forward to seeing what Jacob does in the playoffs amongst the mere mortals against whom he plays.
In Kickball, some catches are easy, some catches should be easy but end up getting dropped, and then there are those catches that define a team and a season. The last case is what Tyler faced in the bottom of the 7th inning. Team up by 4 runs in a see-saw affair? Based loaded? Two Outs? Sinking liner belted to left field... miss it and it could roll all the way to the playground. Catch it ... and become immortal. Tyler in a full layout made the diving catch that would make any web-gem fan, proud and secured the big victory. Heck of a catch Tyler.
Joey had a big decision to make... try for a base hit and hope a run followed, or sacrifice himself on the altar of pop flies. The decision was easy, with 1 out, Joey steps up to the plate, knowing a pop fly is the only way to go. Boots it to center field deep, its caught for out #2... runner on third tags up... and they're in!!! Kicked Your Balls tie the game and later take the lead for an 8-7 win!! Nicely done!!
An Underdog Kickball game typically lasts and hour, but during this short period there are sometimes true moments glory. An instance of this elusive heroism came at the end of the Kick Your Balls vs. Portfolio Polygamists game when a runner tempted outfielder Britney McClane by pursuing Second Base with two outs left in the bottom of the seventh inning. The runner timed his arrival into the bag perfectly, yet he did not anticipate the power and velocity of Britney's throw. The ball overwhelmed the runner, who fell off the bag. A skillful bounce from the same throw came up and hit the runner after being bucked off the base, and this ended the game in a win for Britney and Kick Your Balls.
Tyler did an awesome job showing off the Underdog spirit. He showed tons of effort in every play including a hard slide into first base.
