The softball games at Lower Woodlands on Tuesday night were undoubtedly some of the most exciting and well played games of the year. In the end, My Salsa was able to build a big lead early and then hang on against a fired up Master Blaster sqaud.
In the first semi final game, the Master Blasters scored 8 runs in the 1st inning, building what turned out to be an insurmountable lead against the Slammers. The big inning was capped by a towering 3 run home run from Dan Embick. But even after the big inning, the Slammers fought back with 4 runs in the 6th and 1 run in the 7th. But the 7th inning rally stalled with 2 runners on base and the Master Blasters posted a 13-7 win.
In the 2nd semifinal game, My Salsa was taken to the edge of elimination by the Sting Rings. The Sting Rings scored 3 runs in the 1st inning and with some outstanding defense held a 3-0 lead through 3 1/2 innings. My Salsa rallied for 4 runs in the bottom of the 4th to take a 4-3 lead, but the Sting Rings answered in the their half of the 6th with 4 runs to take a 7-4 advantage. In the home half of the 6th, My Salsa managed to squeeze across 5 runs and take a 9-7 lead. The key hit in the inning was a triple by Mike Hague, who had also hit a HR in the 4th. Mike finished the game with 4 RBI. My Salsa then was able to retire the Sting Rings in the top of the 7th to secure the victory and set up the exciting Championship game.
The 7th seed Master Blasters looked overmatched against the #1 seed My Salsa on paper, but they don't play the games on paper. My Salsa scored 6 runs in the 1st inning and 2 in the 2nd and 3nd innings, to take a 10-1 lead. It looked like the rout was on, but as Lee Corso says "not so fast my friend", the Master Blasters rallied for 4 in the 4th, which was answered by My Salsa in the bottom of the frame with 4 of their own, making the score 14-5. The Master Blaster's then scored 10 runs in the 5th and pulling to the lead 15-14. From that point on it was a see-saw battle. My Salsa responded with 3 in the bottom of the 5th to take the lead back. Not to be out done, the Master Blasters tied it wih 2 in the 6th inning, but My Salsa came back with 2 in the inning and held a 19-17 lead heading into the deciding 7th. After a quick out, the Master Blasters were able to get runners on 1st and 2nd, with one out. A sacrifice moved the tying runners to scoring position with 2 outs. But the rally stalled after a popout to 3rd base and the My Salsa celebration began. Chrystal Miller was outstanding in field in both games, but particularly in the Championship game, showing some nifty glove work at 2nd base. Both pitchers, Nick for My Salsa and Christal for the Master Blasters were outstanding, with only 1 walk between them.
It was an fantastic game for both spectators and this umpire to watch. Congratulations to both teams for putting on a great show!
Mike Hague was outstanding in the two wins, including the Championship game on Wednesday night at Lower Woodlands. In the semifinal game, a 9-7 win over the Sting Rings, Hague had a Home Run and triple, accounting for 4 RBI. In the Championship game against the Master Blasters, he had 5 hits and played some great defense to secure the win and Championship for My Salsa. Congratulations Mike and My Salsa!
The book of records called regarding the fastest game in history of softball for a full 7 inning game. The highlight of the game came in the top of the 7th inning, after being tied 4 -4 for three straight inningsSlugger Kelly Ryan took an 0-2 pitch deep over the left feild wall for what would be the game winner.Final score was 5-4 in a mere 47mins. Great job Kelly.
