In a league beset on all sides by soccer players, volleyball nets, and beautiful people, the Summer Softcore Greenlake Saturday League maintained its focus on the task at hand, winning the championship. The two quarter final match ups, Sigourney Beaver vs. Chile Peppers and Cream & Clear vs. Excaliburs, were hard fought games that placed the winners against the two top seated teams Indy #1 and Fremont Docks. Sigourney Beaver was shaved by the Chile Peppers and Excaliburs sliced through Cream & Clear in an epic fought battle. Now Sigourney Beaver took on the top seated Indy #1, however the Beavers couldn't continue their bid for the championship as Casey Schrouder led the way from left center and crushing the ball at the plate. Across the way team Excaliburs, returned to the Lady of the Lake as Tracey Castagna, of Fremont Dock, scored the game winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning, turning the Excaliburs away. Thus, the final game was the top two team of the league pitted against each other in a classic fight for superiority in the smallest league in USL. In the first inning Fremont jumped to a 2-0 lead, but Indy #1 responded with three runs of their own. Midway through the third the Docks had regained the lead on a barrage of hits and nine runs, giving them an 11-5 advantage. Indy #1 seemed to be down and out, only being able to pull together three runs in the next two innings. However, after shutting out the Dock in the top of the 5th, Indy #1 showed why they were top seated, by scoring four runs to tie the score at 12 at the end of regulation. Thus, the game was set for an extra innings showdown. After a strong showing by Indy #1, shutting down Fremont Dock in the top of the inning, Anne Grimes hit a hard line drive single to score the winning run from third and win the game for Indy #1. This Cinderella story of a team built of rag-tag individuals and put together by the gurus at USL, to champions of the league was made even sweeter by the $50 gift certificate to Tacos Guamas.
During a day filled with great match-ups between evenly matched teams, where any team has equal chance to win the championship in this fun league, some players stand out head and shoulders above the rest. One such player is Anne Grimes. Anne led Indy #1 to their first championship in the history of what is shaping up to be one heck of a franchise. Although Anne is a very inspirational player, it was her ability to perform under pressure that made her stand out among a mired of great players. At the end of the championship game of the Softcore playoffs, with the score tied at 12 and the game in extra innings, Anne came to bat with two men on base. With the pressure mounting, two strikes and rabid crowd of Fremont Dock fans, Anne crushed a line drive single to left center field, thus scoring the winning run and securing her place along Andre Dawson in the Hall of Fame.
