Lower Woodland: With a surging offense and a solid defense, number 3 seeded Bone City overwhelmed a powerful 5 seeded Cannon Balls 11-5. It was the Bone City defense, however, that gave them the edge: early in the game, shortstop Sam Procopio fooled everybody with a tricky fake throw to first to get Kevin Sakuda off second base. Combined that with an impressive catcher to pitcher to first play with Molly Kolpin, Ollie Peterson, and Matt Miller, and you've got a recipe for a championship! The Cannon Balls, who gave Bone City it's only loss back on September 18th, wouldn't give up without a fight. An impressive sliding catch from Collin Rigby, and a solid defensive output from their own pitcher Kevin Sakuda kept Cannon Balls within striking distance through the 4th inning. However, the Cannon Balls were held scoreless in the last three innings. Player of the Game Blade Imsande and the rest of the Bone City offense put the game away with 5 unanswered runs.
In the semi final games, Bone City powered past No 2 seeded Unicorns who fell behind early and never had a chance, winning 14-4. A two run homerun by Unicorn's Shane McDonell in the bottom of the 7th cut the game to a 10 run game in an otherwise dominating performance by Bone city. An honorable mention goes to David Hutchison for an outstanding catch in left center. In the second game, Cannon Balls edged out Beverly Hills 9021kick with a four-run bottom of the seventh to win 9-8. Honorable mentions go to Beverly Hills pitcher Evan who came up with some great line drive catches, shortstop Scott, and to Jordan who kicked a big homerun in the third inning to put Beverly Hills up 5-2. Cannon Balls would not easily give up and won thanks to Player of the Game Kevin Sakuda's 2 run double.
This week's Player of the Week is Sam Procopio. Sam pulled the smoke and mirror's play of the year at shortstop. Fielding a ground ball with the quick Kevin Sakuda at second base, Sam went through the throwing motion as if he was throwing the ball to first...the ball however, traveling behind Sam's head, bounced twice to pitcher Ollie Peterson, who had no problems soaking the runner out at third! Congrats to Sam for an OUTSTANDING play, and to Bone city for winning the championship!!!
