1st game Rip vs. XXX coverage:
Rip it got out to an early lead and capitalized on early turnovers (ints) by XXX's all American QB. B-dub (at least that's what it says on his shirt), was fantastic all season, but did not have that magic he usually displays in this particular game. Rip It matriculated down the field several times in the first half with great efficiency. Rip It's QB Cody Nelson distributed the ball well and several key long passes put the game out of reach.
2nd game Lucky Dogz vs. Sacks N Packs:
Lucky Dogz led by their QB/WR extraordinaire, Matt Kim, got out in front with a quick score and dominated the first half. The game started out with 2 turnovers on offense for Sacks and it seemed like their night was going to be a long one. However, in the second half, they stormed back as they were able to take advantage of 2 turnover on downs. They quickly attacked on those scores and brought the game within reach. In the end, Lucky Dogz preserved the win with a key first down which let them run the clock out. The championship was set with 2 well matched teams; teams that knew each others strengths and weaknesses.
Championship game:
An evenly matched contest and it was a barn burner! Lucky Dogz came out blazin with a nice drive for a score. Rip It matched their intensity with a nice drive of their own. It went back and forth and at the half, it seemed like the last possession would dictate the winner or possibly even an overtime frame or two. Rip It came out in the second half on a mission. They were executing their pass plays to perfection. It seemed like every time they needed a first down, they achieved one. Lucky Dogz was their step for step however. They would score right after and got a key interception down the stretch that seemed to turn the tide. They scored with just under 1:30 left on the clock. After a timeout, Nelson calmly marched his team down the field and got into scoring position and eventually scored but he gave the Dogz enough time to answer. Lucky Dogz' QB threw a pass over the middle towards mid field and John Bon stepped in front of the defender for a pick-six to seal the championship for Rip It! It was a great comeback for Rip It and a gut wrenching loss for Lucky Dogz! I was just glad and honored to witness/referee a great match (and season I might add)!
Congratulations to Rip It!
RIP-IT fought hard all season to earn the number one seed in the playoffs and all it seemed to do was create a great deal of pressure in the championship game. It there's one thing the Statdog knows, it's that sometimes it's harder to play as the favorite, rather than the Underdog. So with the season in the balance, and the defense struggling to stop the Juggernaut Lucky Dogz offense, somebody needed to step up and make a play to help RIP-IT live up to those championship expectations. That somebody was John Bon. With his team narrowly out in front, late in the game, John stopped a would-be game-winning drive by intercepting a pass in the middle of the field. John wasn't satisfied with just an interception, and thus took the championship into his own hands by applying a few quick moves and eluding everyone in his way, returning the interception all the way home for the game clinching touchdown. It was definitely the Play of the Week, and because of it's championship impact, the play certainly earned John Player of the Week honors.
In a BIG show down early in the season it was Betsy Twist that earned this weeks player of the week! She came up big on a lot of receptions, making some tough catches look easy. It was her play at the end of the game that truly earned her this spot, with her team up 2 points against a tough Sacks N Racks, Sacks went for 2 to tie the game. With receivers popping up everywhere the mistake was made to go to Betsy's side as she came up with the winning INT! Great job Betsy!
