The Evil Tangents have been playing in various Underdog leagues for over 5 years. In that time, their championship total was zero. That changed as they picked up a softball championship on Sunday.
In their semi-final game, the jumped on top of Dunder Mifflin in the bottom of the 2nd inning, putting up 5 runs, and giving themselves a 5 run lead that they wouldn't relinquish. Ted Gormley led the way, hitting for a cycle with a single in his last at-bat.
The championship game saw some great defense on both sides. Evil Tangents and Hit It and Quit It combined for 5 double plays on the game. The outfielders on both teams also covered an enormous amount of territory and ran down several balls that would normally have fallen for extra bases.
The championship game started out with Hit It and Quit It jumping out to a 2 run lead that they would hold onto until the 6th inning. Down 3 in the bottom of the 6th, the Evil Tangents started inching their way back, picking up 2 runs and getting to within one.
After holding Hit It and Quit It scoreless in the top of the 7th, the Evil Tangents came back with 2 outs to score one run to tie the game. Then the star of the semi-final game came up to bat. Ted Gormley fought to a 2-2 count and had no fouls to give. He lined a ball into the shallow outfield to knock in the runner from 3rd and pick up the championship.
Ted picked up the cycle in the first game, grabbing a single in his last at-bat, before smashing home the championship-winning RBI in the 2nd game to give the Evil Tangents their first ever championship.
In a thrilling final game to a exciting day of softball on the Eastside, Dennis Feliciano led the Evil Tangents to a minor upset of undefeated Hit It and Quit It.
Dennis went 3 for 5, scored two key runs and also had a sliding catch in foul territory that killed a potential rally. In a fast paced game, Hit it and Quit it held a precarious 2 run lead after 3 1/2 innings, the Evil Tangents then scored 3 in the bottom of the 4th to take a one run lead. Hit it came right back in the 5th with two runs to regain the lead only to see the Tangents score 3 in the bottom of the frame and 3 more in the 6th inning. Feliciano made his spectacular catch in left fields foul territory, which managed to kill Hit it's chance for late inning rally. The game was one of the best played games of the young season and featured excellent defense from both teams. I look forward to seeing these two teams hook up later in the season or in the playoffs.
Dennis not only hit for the cycle today, hustling to expend a single to a double, he also pitched very well. The Dunder Mifflin bats couldn't get to him through the first 4 innings, as he faced the minimum (12 batters) through those four innings.
