It didn't take long for the crowds to mob the newly crowned champs, Afternoon Delight, after a long awaited chance at the title. All 3 fans on the bleachers broke through security to hoist their game winning pitcher, Rob Cameron, onto their shoulders as the whole team rushed the pitcher's mound in exclamations of delight and excitement.
It wasn't an easy road for Afternoon Delight after a tough loss in last year's title game left them hungry for the win all year long. The team as a whole started out a bit slow, with one of their heavy hitters Nick DeMarc earning the "Duke" award, a slightly disturbing leopard-covered jockstrap that is worn after a bad play or at bat. Nick, according to his teammates, easily earned this the first inning with a strikeout in his first at bat. However, after meandering their way through 3 innings, Nick totally redeemed himself in "Dumb and Dumber" fashion with some key hits in an explosive 9-run 4th inning. Those hits allowed him to happily return the Duke. From the mound, a Felix Hernandez sized effort placed Rob Cameron as the front runner for 2011's Cy Young winner, giving up only 2 earned runs in a 14-4 win, helping his team to their first playoff victory of the day!
Meanwhile, Beer Batters were chugging through the ranks, upsetting two teams on their way to a spot in the championship. Katie Krall and Cathe Cherais combined for 3 home runs and over 20 hits on the day to boost their team into the title match.
And so the stage was set for the championship, with Afternoon Delight vying for a long-awaited crown and Beer Batters hoping to upset the top-seeded team to cap a complete Cinderella story. After a scoreless 1st inning, Beer Batters blasted 5 runs to take the lead, but Afternoon Delight would follow with 3 runs in the 2nd and 2 in the 3rd to tie the game with 5 runs a piece. Katy Krall of Beer Batters and Geoff White of Afternoon Delight continued to make incredible plays on defense, keeping both offenses silent.
Afternoon Delight took a 3-run lead into the 6th inning, thanks in large part to a rally started by their captain, Kim Gutierrez. Beer Batters made a valiant effort in the 6th with 2 runs to put pressure on their opponent, but the 4 RBI's by offensive juggernaut Brandon Huelman proved to be too much as Afternoon Delight locked their defense down for tight 8-7 win.
Great season both teams!
"How To Hit Under Pressure: The Brandon Huelman Story." After his performance on Sunday during the playoffs, Brandon could easily make a book about his hitting exploits on the way to winning a championship with the title above. Stealing the show with 3-3 hitting in the title game and coming up with 4 huge RBI's (half the team total),Brandon helped seal the deal against their opponent for a victory. Way to go Brandon!
Down by 2 runs at the end of a very tight and competitive game on Sunday, Adam stepped to the plate in the bottom of the 7th and delivered a base clearing "walk off" shot to win the game for Afternoon Delight.Big time players make big time plays.
With an absolutely awesome display of hitting and base running on Sunday Nick batted 4 for 4 smashing 4 home runs and driving in 7 of Afternoon Delight's 20 runs. This was a feat that has been rarely seen in Underdog League history and definitely one for the record books. If there was an individual Hall of Fame for Underdog Sports players, Nick would certainly be asked to send his uniform, shoes and bat to the HOF for future generations to marvel at and remember. Nick was also very strong on defense sucking up everything that was hit to him helping lock down Big Bat Bigger Balls batters and holding them to 1 run. We will probably never see this type of performance again in Underdog softball games. Hats off to Nick!!
