Well, chalk another one up for the old guys. With teams getting younger and hungrier, one might have thought that this was the season the King of Kings, the Lawn Wranglers, fell to the toughest opponent of them all, Father Time.
One of those young, upstart teams was RNS, a team that had high hopes of finally dethroning the champs. It was a close semi-final game that the Lawn Wranglers were actually losing at halftime, but some big defensive plays toward the end of the game proved to be the game decider as they squeaked by into the championship game. Awaiting them, coming off a nail-biter overtime game of their own, was the upstart Going Deep. Although the Lawn Wrangers went up by 2 scores early, Going Deep kept with their offense and had an opportunity to take the lead late in the game. A huge INT by game MVP Ben Z at the goal line changed the momentum, and the Lawn Wranglers held on to win by 2 points. Maybe next season, young bucks, because these "old" guys are still the Kings.
Rarely in life we are given a second chance, a redemption chance. It was 2nd and goal with Going Deep driving deep, with the Lawn Wranglers clinging to a 4 point lead. A pass was thrown across the middle, tipped up in the air, bobbled by Ben and fell to the turf, Ben along with it. That was my moment, Ben thought. That was the game. After picking himself up, he knew he had to make another play to help his team out. The next play, he read an inside slant perfectly, jumped in front of the receiver and came away with a huge INT that turned the tide of the game. Well done, Ben, and congrats to the Lawn Wranglers on another title.
In a long-anticipated matchup between the Lawn Wranglers and RNS, Tad O helped lead the way as the Lawn Wranglers easily handled their opponents. Tad threw for 6 TD's and even had a super nice juke (apparently his first juke in years!) to gain extra yardage for a first down. This won't be the final chapter in these two team's season, as a playoff matchup seems in the cards.
