With an unexpected bye in their semi-final match up, Bottom of the Fifth had to come ready to bring it with no warm-up game for the championship. Even with Jon, their long first baseman on the bench and Becky & Paco just returning on a 13 hour road trip, they did -indeed- bring it! It was all defense starting in the 1st with a great run down and tag out at the plate. Opponent bunts were nearly useless and anything kicked in the air was almost an automatic out. With some precision bunting from Kelsey and Kristin to get runners on base, Paco came through with a sac fly and we had a 2-0 game heading into the 6th. The Tots got it close with a run in the top of the 6th but in the bottom, Wilfred had a nice single followed by a beautiful slide into 3rd. He scored an add on run and Bottom of the Fifth could not be overcome and earned a hard fought championship victory.
Paco brought it all on Sunday night and bottom of the fifth needed it all. With his usual pirouette pitching delivery just mesmerizing the opponents coupled with his ability to get right on bunts from catcher or pitcher and make precision throws to first must have accounted for at least 50% of the total outs. [Although, we should share that glory with Jon at first who kept making ridiculous stretching catches.] Paco's offense was pretty sweet as well with a 3 for 4 night including a huge 2 run HR to center which ended up being the difference in a very competitive 1 run victory. Thanks for keeping it fun Paco and you deserve this POTW.
